Concurrent GCs and Modern Java Workloads: A Cache Perspective
Maria Carpen-Amarie, Georgios Vavouliotis, Konstantinos Tovletoglou, Boris Grot, Rene Mueller
Abstract summary
This paper investigates whether concurrent Java garbage collectors slow applications by displacing useful data from the last-level cache. A deliberately cache-sensitive microbenchmark shows substantial interference, whereas most Renaissance workloads show much weaker effects. The analysis attributes that difference to the applications’ sensitivity to cache capacity, clarifying when collector-induced cache pollution is likely to matter.
